Skype,
the Microsoft-owned online video calling service, has quietly announced that it
will no longer offer an app pertaining to smart TVs starting throughout June.
Confirmation
of the shutdown comes by way of a support page - first spotted with the BBC -
which points out that smartphones and tablets are actually a more popular
podium for Skype users.
In the
past, users have changed the way they use Skype, with many accessing it from a
new mobile device - including when inside living room. We want to make certain
we prioritize delivering ideal experience to the websites our users are
getting, which is why we’ve thought we would focus our efforts in other
locations while supporting key operation on Skype for TV provided that
possible.
Skype
became intended for smart TVs back really. The app was pre-loaded in some sets
- including those from Samsung along with LG - and accessible to download on
many people, including models from Sony, Panasonic along with Sharp.
As
someone who had used it during the past, I found that your app didn’t quite
produce on its promise - which sounds great in theory. The service was to some
degree unreliable and tricky to put together, whereas picking up a new phone or
tablet along with launching an app can be second nature to people currently.
Plus, there are more video calling options, including virtually any popular
messaging app along with Apple’s own FaceTime assistance.
Skype’s
smart TV app will no longer receive updates after July 1, but those who may
have already downloaded it can carry on and use it. There’s no confirmed date
for if your app will cease to function, but it is existing on borrowed time.
