i3 or Ryzen 3: Which one should you buy?

This year Intel and AMD have gone head to head in CPU releases, and these latest technology updates for low-budget PC-owners are no exception. So, if you’re on a budget and want a computer to handle a simple workload, which one would you go for, the i3 or the Ryzen 3? Hold that thought and read on to find out how these processors stack up against each other.

With the latest updates in mind, which models are better?

The first thing you should know is that when comparing Intel’s i3 series with AMD’s Ryzen 3, we’re actually comparing four models. Intel’s 2-core 4 thread 7100 competes against the 4-core 4-thread Ryzen 3 1200 model, whereas the core i3 2-core 4-thread 7300 comes up against the 4-core 4-thread Ryzen 3 1300X.

Overclocking

Intel’s 7100 and 7300 models have faster base clocks than both their Ryzen counterparts at 3.9GHz and 4.0GHz respectively. However, the Ryzen 1200 and 1300X, running at 3.1GHz and 3.5Hz, have an overclocking option that allows them to run at speeds up to 3.8-4.0 GHz. The overclocking option makes the Ryzen processors more attractive in this category.

Gaming and General Performance

With 1080p resolution, both the Ryzen 1200 and 1300X outperform Intel’s flagship models in the gaming sector, clocking in with impressive performance. That’s another strike against Intel as the Ryzen 3s also outdo their i3 counterparts by 17-29% in general performance, at least according to AMD.

Conclusion

Any way you look at it, Ryzen 3 trumps i3, and that’s even before you put a price in the equation. The Ryzen 3s are about $10 cheaper than their i3 equivalents, and they perform better. So, which of the two should buy?
Whatever you decide, one thing is for sure that having a choice finally is a good thing. AMD has not been at par with Intel for years now. So it is a good situation for the industry in general.
